The ethanolic extractor Vitex negundo Linn. at 250 and 500 mg/kg doses significantly decrease Serum Bilirubin, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline Phosphates (ALP) and Total Protein(TP) levels against hepatotoxicity (HT) produced by administering a combination of three antitubercular rugs isoniazid (7.5 mg/kg), rifampin (10 mg/kg)and pyrazinamide (35 mg/kg). Alcoholic extract of the seeds of Vitex negundo Linn. showed the hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride inducedliver damage. The extract was found to beeffective in preventing liver damage which wasevident by morphological, biochemical andfunctional parameters
Uses:-The leaves of Vitex negundo Linn. are antibacterial, antitumor, astringent, febrifuge, sedative, tonic and vermifuge. They are useful indispersing swellings of the joints from acute rheumatism and of the testes from suppressed gonorrhea. The juice of the leaves is used foremoving foetid discharges and worms from ulcers, whilst oil prepared with the leaf juice is applied to sinuses and scrofulous sores. Extracts of the leaves have shown bactericidal and antitumor activity. Leaves are anti-parasitical, alterative, aromatic, vermifuge, pain reliever.
